2008 CBA Research Links

This school year, our 5th grade students will complete a Classroom Based Assessment (CBA) in social studies.  All 5th grade classes will do the CBA called "You Decide."

Researching ideas and help.

The task, as defined by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, is to write a persuasive paper or presentation that explains how a public issue* is related to both the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.  Students will provide background information on the issue and they will make an informed decision about the issue that is supported with convincing reasons and facts.  Additionally, students will use a graphic organizer to analyze different point of view from various stakeholders.

*Possible public issues, phrased as a question:
1. Should schools have dress codes or uniform policies?
3. Should classes or schools be single-gender?
4. Should students be required to learn a foreign language in school?
5. Should students be allowed to skip a grade if their work is outstanding?
6. Should student be required to repeat a grade if they don't pass?
7. Should 6th grade be in elementary or middle school?
